What To Look For In An Engraved Ring

Not all engraved wedding rings are alike! The century-old practice of hand engraving is like a signature – each one is unique. But when considering hand engraving on your custom wedding ring, be sure to look for these features:

• Depth – The deeper the cuts, the longer the design will last!
• Details – Do you want swirls or cross hatches? Flowers or leaves?
• Symmetry – If the engraving is on the sides of the ring, is it even side-to-side, and mirror opposite? That takes talent!
• Style – Each engraver has a style. Be sure to see samples before you buy.

Delicate mill grain edges provide a frame for the hand engraving on the sides of this custom ring. Small diamonds are incorporated into the design.

Machine Engraving Vs. Hand Engraving

Not all engraving on wedding rings is done by hand. Many wedding bands have designs that are stamped onto the metal when they are made. While this process is less expensive, it doesn’t have the depth and texture of hand engraving. It also tends to be a more rope-like style.

The lines and swirls of this custom engagement ring were produced by a computer, not hand engraved.

Another common finish is called laser etching, which is more of a scratched-on finish. This style usually has a 2D effect and is easy to damage. Etching is not the same as engraving, and doesn’t last as long.

Since hand engraving is so personal, having the same artist is essential when designing custom, matching wedding bands. Because engraving is like a signature, it’s difficult to copy another engraver’s style. So when creating an engraved band engagement ring, it’s good to get that matching band made at the same time!

Take wedding bands. We used to make a lot of very standard diamond wedding bands at our Dublin custom jewelry store, Scott’s Custom Jewelers. And they’re great! (I happen to have one or three!)

But recently, we’ve been designing some GORGEOUS custom wedding bands that break all of the rules.

My new favorite is the crown wedding band.

This style looks amazing on it’s own, but when it’s paired up to a diamond engagement ring – wowsa!

This particular band, like most of our jewelry, was inspired by a bunch of things – a picture, some inherited diamonds and details from T.L.’s original diamond engagement ring (which we also created using our special computer aided design/CAD technology & 3D printer).

T loved the marquise shapes in this photo, but only wanted half of this design. Plus, her engagement ring had some fabulous scroll work and a small diamond on the side of the ring that she didn’t want to cover up. So we went to work.

Oh – did I mention that now T lives out of state? Not a problem with all of the technology out there! With our computer aided design program, we were able to design the crown ring, send pictures and even a 3D printed model for T to actually try on for size.

The end result. We think it’s beautiful, unique and certainly not something you’ll see on everybody!
