Solitaire style engagement rings, small details like hidden halos, infinity symbols and initials, and yellow gold mountings are definitely seeing a comeback!

What Exactly Is A Solitaire?

Once the gold standard (we love a good jewelry pun) in engagement rings, solitaire style means one main gemstone or diamond in the design. While 3 stone rings were super popular in the 2000s because they symbolized the past, present and future, the trend towards one single diamond is on the rise! Set up high in the mounting, longish shapes like ovals, marquise and emerald-cut diamonds are getting a lot of requests lately, but round diamonds are still the best sellers.

Another cool feature of a solitaire engagement ring is the thin band. Many brides are stacking multiple wedding bands next to their solitaires, so a thinner band looks great. BUT, thin isn’t strong, so…

…we’ve figured out a way to keep the look AND make them strong. The secret is in the profile! We make our custom solitaire rings tall, not wide. That attention to detail makes all of the difference on strength. Yep, we’re jewelry engineers over here! The ring still looks thin and delicate, but won’t bend under pressure (or under steering wheels in Columbus traffic!)

A hidden halo is a simple circle of diamonds at the base of the main stone – not circling the edge, but rather circling the bottom. You don’t see the diamonds from the top of the ring, but that profile – it’s amazing! Think of it more as a tiara, not a crown, for your diamond. Hidden halos are very classy, and are great for an engagement ring that sits up high.

Infinity Symbols, Initials And More – Personalizing That Ring!

A lot of people want to include something special on their engagement rings, and that side profile on the ring has a sweet spot for symbols, initials or pops of color. For years, the color of the metal in engagement rings was white. Either 14k white gold, or platinum metal. But lately, 14k yellow gold is becoming super popular! Beautiful on pretty much everyone’s skin, yellow gold (and rose gold) made up about half of all of our custom engagement rings this past year.

• What shape of gemstone do you both like (we’ll show you examples)?

• What color and kind of metal do you prefer?

• If you’re looking for a diamond, do you want a mined gemstone, or a lab grown diamond?

Buying an engagement ring is probably the only decision you’ll have/get to make, on your own, on your way to the altar! And many couples actually do come in together to design their custom engagement ring.

What should I expect when I come to Scott’s?

If you want to surprise your soon-to-be fiancé, this is what to expect when you come to design your perfect engagement ring at Scott’s.

First off, you don’t have to have all the answers when you come in. We don’t expect it! Mainly because you won’t even know the questions! But you WILL ace this test – promise!

We’ll ask questions like, what is she (or he) like? What does she usually wear? What does she do for a living? What kinds of jewelry does she wear now? Does she spend a lot of time on Pinterest – let’s look at her page!

We can usually get a good feel for the style of engagement ring she’ll want with a little digging.

Now for the details!

Now we’ll get to the specifics. Details like, do you have a family gemstone you want to incorporate into this design? Inherited diamonds not only save you money, but they add so much history and emotion into a custom engagement ring. Even re-purposing small diamonds from say, a diamond heart pendant that her grandmother gave to her when she turned 18, can be used in a custom design. Or maybe your own parents have jewelry that they want you to use in your new piece. All of that is possible at Scott’s.

Mined or lab grown diamonds?

So, what if you don’t have any diamonds to use. No problem! We’ll help guide you on your diamond choices too (we love them all – we’re not diamond snobs!)

Lab grown diamonds come in every shape and size. The only difference between a lab and a mined diamond is where they come from – and the price!

Do you want to use mined diamonds, or lab grown diamonds? Both are diamonds (the Federal Trade Commission backs this up Forbes.com), but depending upon your budget, a lab grown diamond can save you 20-50% over mined diamonds. Lab grown diamonds are also more ecologically sustainable than mined diamonds. Either way, we have them both!

Size matters

By using sample stones, we’ll show you the sizes and shapes of the diamonds for your engagement ring. We find that a visual is helpful. And we’ll also explain all those letters and numbers – VS, SI1, G-H – that describe diamonds. They can be confusing, but we can show you the differences.

Seeing is believing

After we figure out the center diamond, Scott’s will start searching for diamonds in your price range and with your specs, for you to see in person. We believe you need to see and compare gems to make the best decision.

We’ll call our many diamond sources and bring in 3 to 4 gemstones. You can then see the differences and make a better determination of which stone, as Grandpa used to say, “winks at you.” And since we don’t own the stones, we aren’t trying to push a certain diamond on you, because we need to get rid of stock. That really makes a difference to your bottom line!

It’s the benefit of internet’s vast inventory, but with the guidance of a professional. Really – you won’t make a mistake this way!

Finding out her ring size

Once we have the style of the ring, and know what our main, center stone will be, we need that ring size!

Nothing is worse than dropping to your knee, romantically proposing to your beloved, then finding out the ring is too small! No matter what her size is, she’ll think she’s too big, and the moment is ruined.

So, if we don’t already know the ring size, we’ll help you be super sneaky, and get it from her. If you can’t bring in a ring that she wears on her engagement finger for us to size, we’ll have you slyly put one on your finger, and where it stops, we’ll have you take a picture, then we’ll size YOU.

According to BRIDES Magazine, what’s old is new again, and engraving on engagement rings has definitely seen a resurgence! “People are looking for intricate engraving, accent diamonds, and other details that take the ring beyond a simple solitaire,” says Ashley Zhang of Ashley Zhang Jewelry.

What To Look For In An Engraved Ring

Not all engraved wedding rings are alike! The century-old practice of hand engraving is like a signature – each one is unique. But when considering hand engraving on your custom wedding ring, be sure to look for these features:

• Depth – The deeper the cuts, the longer the design will last!
• Details – Do you want swirls or cross hatches? Flowers or leaves?
• Symmetry – If the engraving is on the sides of the ring, is it even side-to-side, and mirror opposite? That takes talent!
• Style – Each engraver has a style. Be sure to see samples before you buy.

Delicate mill grain edges provide a frame for the hand engraving on the sides of this custom ring. Small diamonds are incorporated into the design.

Machine Engraving Vs. Hand Engraving

Not all engraving on wedding rings is done by hand. Many wedding bands have designs that are stamped onto the metal when they are made. While this process is less expensive, it doesn’t have the depth and texture of hand engraving. It also tends to be a more rope-like style.

The lines and swirls of this custom engagement ring were produced by a computer, not hand engraved.

Another common finish is called laser etching, which is more of a scratched-on finish. This style usually has a 2D effect and is easy to damage. Etching is not the same as engraving, and doesn’t last as long.

Since hand engraving is so personal, having the same artist is essential when designing custom, matching wedding bands. Because engraving is like a signature, it’s difficult to copy another engraver’s style. So when creating an engraved band engagement ring, it’s good to get that matching band made at the same time!

Decide On A Diamond Shape

When buying a diamond for an engagement ring, choosing the right shape is crucial. Diamonds are available in all kinds of shapes and sizes. The most important factor, though, is your partner’s taste in jewelry. Most couples have a discussion about the shape, size and look of the overall ring before they buy a stone, but having a diamond shape dictionary is helpful!

Diamond Shapes Dictionary

• Round Brilliant Cut – This is the most popular diamond cut and one that accounts for more than 75% of the diamonds being purchased. This shaped diamond has the most brilliance and fire, which makes it both timeless and popular.
• Oval And Marquise Cut – These diamond shapes offer symmetrical designs and a more elongated look. The result is the appearance of a larger diamond.
• Princess Cut – The square or rectangular shaped diamond has distinct, 90 degree pointed corners, with small faceting, or cuts throughout the body of the stone, which makes it even more brilliant.
• Emerald Cut – One of the classics! This cut is also known as the step cut. Because of how “clean” it appears, the diamond material is usually higher grade and has greater clarity. This is generally rectangular in shape.
• Pear Shape Cut – This popular diamond shape resembles a teardrop, and has small faceting throughout the stone.
• Heart Shape Cut – While this may be the most romantic choices, this cut really needs an expert diamond cutter to bring out its brilliance and size.
• Cushion Shape Cut – This is a square brilliant cut diamond with rounded corners, kind of like a pillow, and the center has many facets to maximize its brilliance.
• Radiant Cut – Rectangular cut, similar in shape to the Emerald cut, but more facet work in the center, which results in more brilliance.
• Asscher Cut – This is more of a square emerald cut. Facets are step cut and have the ability to reflect light. Other cuts like the Trapezoid, Half-Moon, Kite, Trillion and Baguette shaped diamonds generally are used as complementary side diamonds, flanking the center diamond of the engagement ring.

How Size And Color Affect Diamond Prices

Carat weight, which is how diamonds are priced, will play a primary role in price. Smaller-sized diamonds cost less to purchase, compared to a single diamond with the same carat weight. For example, buying three .50 carat diamonds will cost a less than what you will pay for one diamond weighing 1.50 carats.

Another factor that determines price is color grade, or the whiteness of the diamond. The color scale begins at D and runs to Z. The highest color grades are D, E and F, which are categorized as colorless. The near colorless range is G, H and I. The near colorless will still look white and brilliant, but will cost less than colorless diamonds. As you move towards M on the color scale, the diamond will take on a hint of yellow or brown.

What Is Clarity

Clarity, or the clearness of the stone, also effects the cost of a diamond. The clarity scale begins at Internally Flawless and runs to Included. Almost all diamonds have natural inclusions that occur during the formation process. We call them freckles! The amount and type of inclusion will increase or decrease the cost of the diamond. The importance lies in inspecting them with the naked eye. If you have a SI1, or Slightly Included 1, diamond, it will have marks or inclusions, but they will NOT be visible with the naked eye. However, if a diamond has a clarity of Included 1 or 2 (I1 or I2), the inclusions will be visible and can affect the brilliance and sparkle of the diamond.

How Cut Affects The Diamond

Cut is not the shape of the diamond, but rather how well each shape is cut by the diamond cutter, and it plays an important role in a diamond’s sparkle. There are a lot of physics when it comes to cutting a diamond. For example, all cutting, or facets, should be in geometrical relation with each other. This is known as symmetry. An excellent symmetry will allow light to flow in and out of the diamond properly, resulting in the maximum brilliance of the diamond. Diamonds that are not as symmetrical may not allow light to flow freely, which may decrease shine.

But we do have a “bonus” daughter: Sarah.

How Sarah Became Part of Scott’s Custom Jewelers

Sarah started working for us at Scott’s Custom Jewelers right out of high school.

She was toying with the idea of becoming a jeweler and wanted to test the waters.

We loved having her with us. As we grew and moved our custom jewelry store out of downtown Akron and into Fairlawn, OH, Sarah followed us.

She studied Jewelry Craft at Kent State University, and while she went to school, she continued to work for us part time.

Why Sarah Felt Like Family

Working with Sarah was a treat.

She is a feisty little Italian/Irish beauty who not only knew how to make jewelry, but was also a great sales associate.

She is engaging, sweet, and really knew how to make our customers happy.

Most people assumed she was one of ours — and we may have let them believe it, because we felt like she was!

Designing Sarah’s Custom Engagement Ring

So, when Sarah started dating Shawn, we kind of knew he was “the one.”

And when Shawn came to us to custom design her diamond engagement ring, we were both honored and, truthfully, scared.

This ring had to be perfect.

We knew what kind of diamond ring she would want. Working in a custom jewelry store, Sarah and I had seen a ton of beautiful engagement rings.

Shawn picked out a stunning oval-shaped diamond, and Scott started sketching.

Adding the Details Sarah Would Love

Sarah is a girly girl.

Flowers, butterflies, pink, and plenty of sparkle — it all needed to be in this ring.

We started with the center stone. It was a beauty, and adding a custom diamond halo made it crazy gorgeous.

The band was designed as a twisting duo of diamond ribbons. This not only added character to the ring, but also helped give it stability so it wouldn’t turn on her hand.

Under the center diamond, we cut out images of butterflies on the basket.

And of course, we added more diamonds there too.

A Rose Gold Engagement Ring Made Just for Her

Sarah had let us know years ago that a rose gold ring would be her choice.

That was a no-brainer.

The combination of pink, diamonds, and swirls made this custom engagement ring a showstopper.

We just knew she would be floored with it.

She was.

The Perfect Wedding Band

Even better?

Her wedding band.

A shadow eternity band of rose gold and diamonds was the perfect complement to the engagement ring.

Thank you, Sarah and Shawn, for letting us be such an important part of your life together.

Scott and I are getting ready for a weekend away. We’ll (hopefully) see the sun, eat great food, and peruse booths filled with beautiful, custom JEWELRY!

I know, rough life.

But, as many of you already know, business trips aren’t as glamorous as they sound. Sure, the location is wonderful. Heck, just seeing grass instead of snow and ice is a plus in January! But when Scott and I go to jewelry trade shows, We Work.

Which brings up the age-old dilemma: What kinds of jewelry should you pack (and how to pack it), for a business trip? Scott’s Custom Jewelers has you covered.

The right accessories can help you create more outfits with fewer clothes. And let’s face it, woman live in mix-and-match black. So your jewelry choices can help you personalize your look and take up next to no space in your luggage.

Here’s some of my fail-safe tips on jewelry choices for business travel.

• Skip the fussy pieces. Stiff collars-style necklaces can get damaged in your suitcases. Same with ornate bib necklaces. They tend to tangle. Instead, go for a few statement pendants that can morph from a casual vibe when worn with a leather cord, to OH WOW! when worn on a fancier chain.

• Next, grab some studs. And I mean the jewelry kind! Stud earrings are a great way to make an outfit look finished but not fussy, which is exactly what you wear to meetings. I love to bring pearl studs in the summer, because they look amazing against tan skin. But of course, diamonds go with everything!

• Don’t forget your dangle earrings! I usually pack a few fun, funky pieces in sterling silver. If the business trip includes cocktail hours, a sparkly pair of hoops is also a must.

• A sure fire way to change up an outfit is an armful of bracelets. Pile them on, and your little black dress is complete. Wear just a single bracelet for meetings so the clacking isn’t distracting. And here’s the great thing about jewelry fashion:  You can mix your costume jewelry with your “real” bracelets. The more the merrier!

• What about rings? In addition to my amazing custom wedding ring  (thank you hubby), I always pack a few others. For sure, I take my sterling silver hammered ring. It’s looks great for casual affairs. And colored gemstone rings can be just the pop of color that brings your outfits together.

• Now – how to pack it all up. I don’t use a fancy shmancy travel jewelry case. Yes, that’s a Crown Royal bag. No judgment. Instead, I use small baggies (I’ll give you some – ask me next time you’re in the store) and pack them up individually. The bags protect the jewelry from scratches. For extra protection, I stick the Crown Royal bag in my shoe.

I always say, the right jewelry can make your outfit. And they always fit!

Take wedding bands. We used to make a lot of very standard diamond wedding bands at our Dublin custom jewelry store, Scott’s Custom Jewelers. And they’re great! (I happen to have one or three!)

But recently, we’ve been designing some GORGEOUS custom wedding bands that break all of the rules.

My new favorite is the crown wedding band.

This style looks amazing on it’s own, but when it’s paired up to a diamond engagement ring – wowsa!

This particular band, like most of our jewelry, was inspired by a bunch of things – a picture, some inherited diamonds and details from T.L.’s original diamond engagement ring (which we also created using our special computer aided design/CAD technology & 3D printer).

T loved the marquise shapes in this photo, but only wanted half of this design. Plus, her engagement ring had some fabulous scroll work and a small diamond on the side of the ring that she didn’t want to cover up. So we went to work.

Oh – did I mention that now T lives out of state? Not a problem with all of the technology out there! With our computer aided design program, we were able to design the crown ring, send pictures and even a 3D printed model for T to actually try on for size.

The end result. We think it’s beautiful, unique and certainly not something you’ll see on everybody!

Whether a diamond is grown in a laboratory or mined from the earth, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ruled that a diamond is a diamond, no matter where it was formed.

Lab-Grown Diamonds vs. Mined Diamonds

In the jewelry industry, we’ve been watching big diamond suppliers, such as De Beers, market these new lab-grown diamonds as a fashion piece that is less “precious” than traditional mined diamonds.

But the reality is that laboratory-grown diamonds have the exact same chemical make-up as mined diamonds.

In fact, we’ve been selling high-quality lab-grown diamonds for our custom diamond engagement rings in our Dublin, Ohio store for about a year now.

They look exactly the same as mined diamonds, and they cost 20–30 percent less on average. Kind of a big deal!

Why the Diamond Industry Has Strong Opinions

It helps to know, first off, who De Beers is.

According to Wikipedia, “De Beers Group is an international corporation that specializes in diamond exploration, diamond mining, diamond retail, diamond trading and industrial diamond manufacturing sectors.”

The company is active in several countries and has historically played a major role in the diamond market.

Until the start of the 21st century, De Beers effectively had total control over the diamond market as a monopoly. Competition has since dismantled the complete monopoly, though De Beers Group still sells a large share of the world’s rough diamond production.

So what De Beers says about lab-grown diamonds may be, shall we say, a little biased?

Common Questions About Lab-Grown Diamonds

There’s been so much talk about these diamonds.

People often ask:

• Are lab-grown diamonds imitation?
• Are they expensive?
• Are they real diamonds?
• Will they turn my finger green?
• Are they good for engagement rings?

All valid questions.

Let’s look at the facts.

What Exactly Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

Most diamonds, both those made below ground and above ground, are 99.95% carbon.

The other 0.05% can include trace elements or impurities. That’s fancy talk for junk atoms that are not part of the diamond’s normal chemistry.

The only real difference between a lab-grown diamond and one mined from the earth is how it came to be.

How Mined Diamonds Are Formed and Extracted

Mined diamonds are extracted from the earth using heavy machinery and significant disruption to the environment.

Until recently, this was the only way to get a diamond.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made

The process of making a diamond in the lab is pretty cool.

First, a diamond seed, which is also made in the lab, is placed in a Chemical Vapor Deposition, or CVD, chamber.

It sounds like a Star Trek episode, but the CVD is kind of like a greenhouse. That’s where the diamond will grow.

And just like mined diamonds, the quality of lab-grown diamonds can vary. A high-quality diamond seed will make high-quality diamonds.

From Diamond Seed to Finished Stone

Next, hydrogen is pumped into the chamber and ignited. Kind of like a mini Big Bang Theory.

Methane, or CH4, is then introduced, and the diamond begins to grow in layers.

It takes about 12 weeks to make the diamond crystal.

After the growth period, a piece of diamond “rough” is made. It’s not all pretty and sparkly at this point.

This is where both mined and lab-grown diamonds are treated the same. Rough is, well, rough. It needs to be cut and polished.

Why Cutting and Polishing Matter

As with all diamonds, cutting and polishing are where skill plays a part in the beauty of the gemstone.

Good cutters can find the beauty in the rough stone and literally bring it out. It’s super cool to watch!

After the rough is cut into shapes like round, oval, cushion, pear, and more, the diamonds are laboratory graded and laser inscribed with a number.

That number gives the consumer the details on their stone. It’s a pedigree.

What the FTC Says About Lab-Grown Diamonds

According to Forbes Magazine, “The FTC based its decision in favor of scientific facts, not the mined-diamond industry lobby, giving consumers real information on which to make informed diamond purchasing decisions.”

This is great news for the newest diamond purchasers — millennials.
