Your custom ring journey begins with a design appointment. We’ll sit down with you (in person or virtually via ZOOM) to talk about your ideas, budget, and inspiration. This is where the fun begins! Bring all the photos, sketches, Pinterest boards, and any sentimental piece of jewelry you’d like to reuse — like grandma’s diamonds or an old engagement setting.

This is also a great time to go through that jewelry box and recycle all those mismatched earrings, broken chains and out-of-style pieces you don’t wear anymore. We’ll remove any stones for you, recycle the gold, then credit you that amount off your new jewelry.

From there, we’ll create sketches or CAD renderings so you can see exactly how your design will look from multiple angles, before it’s made. We can also easily give you options of on metal color or added design features.

Average time: 1–2 weeks, depending on revisions and design complexity.

Once you’ve reviewed your renderings, we’ll make any small tweaks before production begins. Most clients approve their design within a few days, but we always allow about a week to make sure it’s perfect.

What To Look For In An Engraved Ring

Not all engraved wedding rings are alike! The century-old practice of hand engraving is like a signature – each one is unique. But when considering hand engraving on your custom wedding ring, be sure to look for these features:

• Depth – The deeper the cuts, the longer the design will last!
• Details – Do you want swirls or cross hatches? Flowers or leaves?
• Symmetry – If the engraving is on the sides of the ring, is it even side-to-side, and mirror opposite? That takes talent!
• Style – Each engraver has a style. Be sure to see samples before you buy.

Delicate mill grain edges provide a frame for the hand engraving on the sides of this custom ring. Small diamonds are incorporated into the design.

Machine Engraving Vs. Hand Engraving

Not all engraving on wedding rings is done by hand. Many wedding bands have designs that are stamped onto the metal when they are made. While this process is less expensive, it doesn’t have the depth and texture of hand engraving. It also tends to be a more rope-like style.

And when Shawn came to us to custom design her diamond engagement ring, we were both honored and, truthfully, scared.

This ring had to be perfect.

We knew what kind of diamond ring she would want. Working in a custom jewelry store, Sarah and I had seen a ton of beautiful engagement rings.

Shawn picked out a stunning oval-shaped diamond, and Scott started sketching.

Adding the Details Sarah Would Love

Sarah is a girly girl.

Flowers, butterflies, pink, and plenty of sparkle — it all needed to be in this ring.

We started with the center stone. It was a beauty, and adding a custom diamond halo made it crazy gorgeous.

The band was designed as a twisting duo of diamond ribbons. This not only added character to the ring, but also helped give it stability so it wouldn’t turn on her hand.

Under the center diamond, we cut out images of butterflies on the basket.

And of course, we added more diamonds there too.

A Rose Gold Engagement Ring Made Just for Her

Sarah had let us know years ago that a rose gold ring would be her choice.

That was a no-brainer.

The combination of pink, diamonds, and swirls made this custom engagement ring a showstopper.

We just knew she would be floored with it.

She was.

The Perfect Wedding Band

Even better?

Her wedding band.

A shadow eternity band of rose gold and diamonds was the perfect complement to the engagement ring.

Thank you, Sarah and Shawn, for letting us be such an important part of your life together.

Take wedding bands. We used to make a lot of very standard diamond wedding bands at our Dublin custom jewelry store, Scott’s Custom Jewelers. And they’re great! (I happen to have one or three!)

But recently, we’ve been designing some GORGEOUS custom wedding bands that break all of the rules.

My new favorite is the crown wedding band.

This style looks amazing on it’s own, but when it’s paired up to a diamond engagement ring – wowsa!

This particular band, like most of our jewelry, was inspired by a bunch of things – a picture, some inherited diamonds and details from T.L.’s original diamond engagement ring (which we also created using our special computer aided design/CAD technology & 3D printer).

T loved the marquise shapes in this photo, but only wanted half of this design. Plus, her engagement ring had some fabulous scroll work and a small diamond on the side of the ring that she didn’t want to cover up. So we went to work.

Oh – did I mention that now T lives out of state? Not a problem with all of the technology out there! With our computer aided design program, we were able to design the crown ring, send pictures and even a 3D printed model for T to actually try on for size.

The end result. We think it’s beautiful, unique and certainly not something you’ll see on everybody!

But the best part about making a custom ring at Scott’s is that YOU are the designer! Of course, we’ll help you find your style, but being a part of creating your own jewelry is a rush.

And about the rumor that custom jewelry is more expensive. Nope. Custom doesn’t cost more (especially if you’re recycling your own gems and gold). It just means you’re not sacrificing style and fit, which actually costs more at the end.

Dave and Sue have been together for a long time.  Like most couples, they’ve bought jewelry to celebrate milestones, remember vacations and of course, for gifts! (You can’t go wrong with jewelry fellas!)

And Sue is a very sentimental person.  Each piece of jewelry she’s collected has a story.  But wearing 30+ years of rings can be a little awkward, to say the least.  So she came to Scott’s Custom Jewelers to see what kind of “jewelry magic” he could do with her collection.

There was the diamond band made up of stones from her original, cluster style engagement ring.  Then years later, Dave bought her a “proper” engagement ring with a beautiful cushion cut shaped diamond.  And later, he “juiced up” the solitaire ring with a diamond guard.  All of the gems were gorgeous, but the styles had changed.

So, Scott sat down with them and found a design that Sue liked.  She was drawn toward vintage style rings – very much like the one her grandmother had worn.  Styles with curves and bead work and a lot of diamonds.  That’s a good thing, because she had a lot of diamonds to work with!

By surrounding her cushion cut diamond with the gems from her original engagement ring, Sue was able to create an amazing ring that truly told her story.  And by setting them into 14k white gold, the gems blended together, and looked like one HUGE diamond (definitely a plus!).

The sides of the ring also contained trillion cut diamonds and other gems, woven together in that vintage design.  Scott first designed the ring using CAD technology, and sent her photos that gave her a great idea of what the finished piece would look like.

After some minor adjustments, Scott used a 3D printer (we invested in this awesome piece of equipment to not only cast our designs, but to make real-sized models so that our customer’s could actually see the piece before we made it!) and Sue got to try on her ring before we casted it.

The model was great, because we then could see how high the ring was on her finger – and that was too high!  But, no harm, no foul, because we simply adjusted the design and were good to go. And since we caught the change before we started, no expensive adjustments either.

When Sue saw her finished piece – she gasped!  “It’s exactly what I expected, but with so much more sparkle!” she said.  That’s what we aim for here. Sparkle.
