If you’ve ever wondered “What’s the process of designing a custom ring?” you’re not alone. Most people are curious, but also assume “custom” means expensive, complicated, or only for people who have a clear idea of exactly what they want.
Spoiler alert: none of that is true.
At Scott’s Custom Jewelers in Dublin, Ohio, the process of designing a custom ring is simple, affordable, and actually fun. And yep, custom really just means you get exactly what you want, not the closest thing you could find in a display case.
Here’s how it all works at Scott’s.
First, some background
We’ve been around for a hot minute. 99 years to be exact! (Don’t we look good for 99!)
Seriously, our family has been in the jewelry industry since 1927. It’s in our DNA. What started out as a typical jewelry store in Akron, Ohio by Scott’s grandfather, Edmund Cevasco, has now morphed into a 4th generation, custom jewelry-focused, niche store run by Scott, his wife, Beth and two of their sons – Jacob and Nicholas. (Scott and Beth have six children, and all have worked here in some capacity over the years.) It’s a real life family business!
Now located in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, Ohio, Scott’s Custom Jewelers uses computer technology, 3D printers and all the latest tools to make beautiful pieces for their customers, on-site.
That means nothing get’s lost in translation at Scott’s. Our customers work directly with the team who is making their jewelry. And it’s much faster – nothing is farmed out to an outside company.
So how do we do it?
Step 1: The Conversation (You Talk, We Listen)
Every custom piece starts with a relaxed, friendly conversation with our design team. If you have some idea of what you want – great! Bring:
Pinterest boards
Photos
Heirloom stones
A doodle
Or just a general vibe
We ask questions to understand your style, timeline, and budget—without pressure or jewelry jargon. Our goal is to understand your vision so we can bring it to life.
Once we know what you love, we create a computer aide design, or CAD model of your custom ring. This lets you:
View your design from multiple angles
Make changes
Compare versions
Visualize exactly what your ring will look like
Customers usually say things like: “It looks real!” “Can we make the band slimmer?” or the classic, “Let’s try a bigger stone!”
Why yes, we can.
Step 3: The 3D Printed Model (Your Try-On Moment)
Next, we craft a 3D model (we actually have four 3D printers at the store) so you can try on a replica of your ring before it’s made in gold or platinum. This step is incredibly helpful for checking comfort, proportion, and fit.
It’s also one of the ways we ensure your custom ring reflects your vision perfectly.
Want to make some modifications? No problem! We’ll simply make another model until it’s exactly what you’ve envisioned.
Step 4: Handcrafting Your Ring
Once approved, our jewelers and goldsmiths bring your piece to life. Even with all of the cool technology out there, we still use most of the same tried and true practices that Grandpa used to make your ring. This is where the vision come to life:
Metals are cast
Diamonds or gemstones are set
Details are refined
Everything is polished to perfection
Each ring is crafted with love, precision, and high standards that you simply won’t find in mass-produced pieces. I mean, we’re really picky!
Step 5: The Big Reveal
This is our favorite part. You pick up your finished custom ring, and suddenly all the sketches, CAD images, and 3D models come together in one perfect, meaningful piece.
We’ve seen happy tears, lots of hugs, and the occasional spontaneous proposal!
And we love them all!
But Wait—Is Custom Expensive?
Here’s the truth most people don’t expect:
Custom isn’t more expensive.
It’s simply better value because you’re not paying for features you don’t want. You don’t have:
Mass-production markups
Branding costs
Unnecessary extras
You’re paying for exactly what you want. Period.
You get higher quality.
Custom jewelry is crafted piece-by-piece, not produced in batches. That means stronger, well-made settings that will last for years, cleaner finishing, and stones hand-selected for beauty and budget.
And you get personal service.
You’re not one of a thousand online orders. You’re sitting with real jewelers who care, guide, and help you make confident decisions.
At Scott’s, custom is approachable, affordable, and made to last for generations, not just a season.
